Initially dismissed as “The Three Amigos in space,” Galaxy Quest has since become a cult classic thanks to cable airings, a heartfelt love of the genre, and a satirical awareness that goes beyond surface-level sight gags. The movie knows Star Trek and sci-fi tropes through and through, which keeps it from falling into the typical “Hey, remember this?” parody style that’s all too common. (We’re looking at you, Epic/Disaster/Date Movie series!) Having a cast that includes everyone from Sigourney Weaver to Rainn Wilson doesn’t hurt either.
Well, as a treat for all of us who appreciate the cinematic love letter to Roddenberry and Co., the movie is poised to be adapted into a TV series. According to Deadline Hollywood, the film’s original writer, director, and producer are on board and will resurrect the story of a cast from a cult sci-fi show being mistaken for actual intergalactic heroes by a legion of bullied aliens. There’s no word yet on whether any of the original cast will return, but by Grabthar’s Hammer, we’re glad to see the premise brought back to life!
