Say what you will about Kickstarter (or let Portlandia do it for you), but sometimes it really works, especially when it comes to funding movies that would never make make the cut via the traditional Hollywood machine. First there was the Eddie Pepitone documentary The Bitter Buddha followed by the forthcoming Veronica Mars movie funded by ardent fans via the fundraising site and now there’s a Calvin & Hobbes documentary — Dear Mr. Watterson, a documentary about the impact of Calvin & Hobbes creator Bill Watterson.
First-time director Joel Allen Schroeder financed the project on Kickstarter and had shown it in a few film festivals, but now as Deadline reported earlier this week, Dear Mr. Watterson was just picked up for distribution and we couldn’t be more excited to revisit the Calvin & Hobbes comic strips through the film. The comic, which followed the adventures of a young boy and his stuffed tiger, ran in newspapers for close to a decade before Watterson ended the beloved series in 1995. In the film, the lasting legacy of Calvin & Hobbes with interviews with fans, including Berkeley Breathed who wrote the revered Bloom County comic strip, Bill Amend who writes Foxtrot, Stephan Pastis from Pearls Before Swine and Seth Green of Robot Chicken and Family Guy fame.
