“The Shawshank Redemption” is one of those movies that sticks with you, like peanut butter in a dog’s mouth. It’s one of those movies that if it’s on, you watch. So consider yourself warned: We’re showing it tonight at 8/7c and again at 11/10c.
The film stars Tim Robbins as Andy Dufresne, a banker who is convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and sentenced to life imprisonment (twice, consecutively) at Shawshank State Penitentiary. Once on the inside, he befriends a fellow inmate, Ellis Boyd ‘Red’ Redding (Morgan Freeman) who helps him cope with his life behind bars. In a truly outstanding performance (perhaps matched only by his turn on “Portlandia”) Robbins delivers again and again as Dufresne struggles and eventually embraces hope over despair in a spiritual epiphany that keeps him from truly being a “prisoner” trapped in a cage. The film is certainly dark and rough going, but also riveting and uplifting. It tanked in the box office, but was redeemed by eventually becoming one of the most well-loved movies of all time and was nominated for seven Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor (Freeman), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound Mixing;
