Yesterday, Sony surprised moviegoers and gamers alike by releasing a teaser trailer for a “Ratchet & Clank” movie. The video game series, now over a decade old, features a young anthropomorphic lombax and his robot companion on various quests to save their galaxy from destruction. Both are seen in the teaser, as well as the longtime fool of the series, Captain Qwark. Qwark is a celebrity superhero who actually isn’t much of a hero at all; time and time again he proves to be either morally bankrupt or outright incompetent. Nonetheless, as the teaser makes clear, he has become one of the most iconic comic relief characters in the gaming world.
Although the movie will be produced in partnership with Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment, it will be spearheaded by the series’ longtime developer, Insomniac Games. Insomniac Games has one of the best track records of any game developer in the business, with an average critical score of about 85/100 according to Metacritic. They are best known for creating the original three “Spyro the Dragon” games, four “Resistance” games, and a whopping ten “Ratchet & Clank” games. They are so good at writing their stories and game dialogues that Insomiac’s own TJ Fixman will be penning the script. Fixman is very excited about his next project, and described inheriting the series creatively as being “entrusted with the keys to my father’s cherry Cadillac”. Check out his very personal blog post here.
As for the series itself, it has been announced that the movie will be an origins story, containing most of the plot elements from the original 2002 game. It is unknown who the antagonist will be, but many fans are anticipating Chairman Drek will fill that role. The movie will also take various plot points from other games, namely the Galactic Rangers from “Up Your Arsenal.”
Fans are already very excited about the upcoming movie for they see R&C’s excellent blend of action, humor, and heart as ingredients for a compelling film. Sony anticipates a release sometime in 2015.
