Mark Millar calls “Justice League” an “excellent way of losing $200 million”

Mark Millar isn’t afraid to voice his opinion, but he’s out saying some things that likely won’t make Warner Bros. very happy. The Marvel consultant at Fox and established comic book writer has explained in very great detail why he doesn’t think a “Justice League” movie is going to work.

“I actually think the big problem for them is the characters are just too out of date,” Millar told SciFi Now. “The characters were created 75 years ago, even the newest major character was created 68 years ago, so they’re in a really weird time.”

Of course, some of the characters work just fine on their own. Christopher Nolan proved Batman can still work with his “The Dark Knight” trilogy, and Zack Snyder is likely hoping the same can be said for Superman in “Man of Steel.” But what about the failed “Green Lantern” movie or hoped for “Flash” one? Millar doesn’t think they can work in the modern day.

“I adored the DC stuff growing up but really, how do you do a movie about Green Lantern, his power is that he manifests green plasma from his imagination and uses them as weapons against someone? Even that in itself if you just imagine then watching a fight scene with a guy who’s like a hundred feet away making plasma manifestations fight someone – it’s not exactly raucous, getting up close and personal,” Millar said. “The Flash has door handles on the side of his mask and if he doesn’t wear that mask, I’ll be pissed off, you know what I mean? They’re in a weird, weird situation – if you’ve got a guy who moves at the speed of light up against the Weather Wizard and Captain Cold or whatever, then your movie’s over in two seconds.”

He continued, “You can get away with stuff in comics that in live action’s just a bit sucky — the best one is definitely Aquaman. Aquaman can’t even talk under water. If you think about it in comics it’s fine, you just have a speech balloon, but how do you have Atlantis and people talking under water? Are they gonna talking telepathically? Is it going to be body forms? The actual logistics of each member of the Justice League is disastrous, and you put them all together and I think you get an excellent way of losing $200 million.”

Warner Bros. reportedly wants “Justice League” out in theaters by 2015. Its character roster is said to include Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter and Aquaman, with the villain being Darkseid.

We’re barely halfway through February, but this year’s Too Many Cooks Award for the most bizarre comedy project is already a lock. Blindsiding the world with greatness without any warning, Funny or Die released a 50-minute Donald Trump parody starring an unrecognizable Johnny Depp as Donny.

Ron Howard introduces this “lost” 1988 TV movie adaptation of Trump’s how-to manual The Art of the Deal produced with the retro quality of a Wendy’s training video. Along for the big hair and shoulder pads flashback are Patton Oswalt, Alfred Molina, Todd Margaret‘s Jack McBrayer, Andy Richter, Rob Huebel, Jason Mantzoukas, Paul Scheer, and Michaela Watkins as Ivana — as well as many Reagan-era surprises like a cameo from that loveable cat eater ALF and a theme song by Kenny Loggins.

Much like Eric Jonrosh of The Spoils Before Dying and The Spoils of Babylon fame, “Trump” writes, directs, and narrates his own epic tale of real estate wheelings-and-dealings. Check out the trailer below, and head over to Funny or Die to watch the full Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal movie before the real Donald sics his army of lawyers on Will Ferrell and company. (For more bizarro Johnny Depp characters, be sure to catch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this month on IFC.)

Warner Bros. waiting on “Man of Steel’s” success before pushing “Justice League”

The decision to follow the Marvel Cinematic Universe formula and push a “Justice League” movie always seemed a bit risky for Warner Bros. from where we are standing. The studio has had a hit-and-miss track record with DC comics films, with projects like Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy being massive successes and then films like the Ryan Reynolds “Green Lantern” movie failing.

Now “Man of Steel” is being released, and it could mark a new era for Warner Bros.’ DC films. The movie comes out on June 14 and could set the tone for the planned 2015 “Justice League” film. According to Variety, WB is waiting to see how well “Man of Steel” does in theaters before it really starts pushing “Justice League” forward.

“A ‘Justice League’ film wouldn’t likely be in theaters before 2015, as Warner’s top brass has indicated that they are awaiting the results of ‘Man of Steel,’ which opens June 14, before moving further ahead,” the outlet writes.

Honestly, that’s not too surprising. Will Beall has been developing a script for a while, but Warner hasn’t chosen a director despite much Internet speculation. This seems like the right route to go, since “Man of Steel’s” failure would not bode well for a “Justice League” film with an entirely new cast. Fortunately for WB, “Man of Steel” looks like it will actually be pretty fantastic.

Meanwhile, “Man of Steel” writer David S. Goyer opened up about his take on the film in a new interview with Empire (via ComicBookMovie.com). In the interview, he talked about how Superman will be portrayed as “a man, yet he’s not a man” in the upcoming film. He also explained how he and director Zack Snyder tried to ground the movie in reality.

“It is obviously a much longer process with a character like Superman. It is much easier to do a realistic take on Batman. You know nothing can hurt Superman, presumably other than Kryptonite,” he said. “The challenge was simply: can we figure out a way to make those elements work, quote unquote, in the real world? It’s very much a story of a man with two fathers.”

“Man of Steel” stars Russell Crowe, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Laurence Fishburne. It is due in theaters on June 14, 2013 in IMAX and 3D.

“Justice League” character roster revealed?

There is a lot we think we know about “Justice League,” and not a lot we know for sure. It’s been rumored that the villain is Darkseid and the story for the film will be based on comics issues 183-185, but Warner Bros. has neither confirmed nor denied either story. Now a new report claims to have the list of the character being featured in the film, though we’re going to have to take it with a grain of salt.

Cosmic Book News has a list of DC characters from Superman to Alfred Pennyworth who will allegedly be featured in the new movie. Though none really come as a shock, it’s still debatable if this will be the lineup in “Justice League.”

- Superman is essentially the same character from Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder is consulting regarding the writing of the character.
– Batman: The strategist of the group. Batman doesn’t really want to be involved with these super powered beings he considers too powerful. Easily the most complex written.
– Wonder Woman: She has only been in man’s world a few short months. The Wonder Woman script Michael Goldenberg is developing will be set before the Justice League movie.
– Green Lantern: Will be Ryan Reynold’s character from the Green Lantern movie, but will be freshly written with a more serious tone.
– Flash: The most popular hero in civilian eyes who loves media attention, but when called upon is very serious.
– Martian Manhunter: Alien who has lived on Earth in secret for over a hundred years who has knowledge of Darkseid and his reign.
– Aquaman: Will be the King of Atlantis who has a key role in the film.
– There will also be a heavy military presence in the film which in future rewrites could include characters featured in Man of Steel or even Amanda Waller (Angela Bassett) of which neither are included in the first draft.
– Alfred Pennyworth is in the film in a minor appearance.
– Lois Lane is also in the film in a cameo.
– Darkseid’s Elite will be featured who go up against the Justice League early on in the film.

“Justice League” is due out in the summer of 2015. Thus far, no director has been chosen to helm the project, though many names have been rumored for the role. “Gangster Squad” scribe Will Beall is currently writing the script.
