Paramount Pictures has released a teaser for the full theatrical trailer, as Hollywood studios are now wont to do. In it, Benedict Cumberbatch’s villain character is featured heavily, though we still aren’t quite sure who he’s playing. For a while it had been believed that he was portraying Khan, but a recently released plot synopsis pointed in the direction of Gary Mitchell. The trailer has us back at Khan, as a Japanese version of the teaser includes a scene reminiscent of one in “Wrath of Khan.”
Hopefully this mystery isn’t resolved until “Star Trek Into Darkness” comes out next year. Despite a very “Prometheus”-esque quality to the trailer, there’s a lot of great stuff here. The movie looks beautiful and Cumberbatch seems like he’ll be the movie’s best villain yet. Fingers crossed this film will live up to the promise presented in “Star Trek.”
“Star Trek Into Darkness” is directed by J.J. Abrams and stars Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin, Karl Urban, John Cho and Bruce Greenwood. Newcomers Alice Eve and Benedict Cumberbatch have been added in undisclosed roles. The film is slated to hit theaters on May 17 in IMAX and 3D. Here’s the film’s synopsis, which teases who Cumberbatch’s villain character is:
In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes ‘Star Trek Into Darkness.’ When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.
