Even though it’s autumn, BRAINSTORM has just released the video for one of the best summertime dance anthems of the year. The Portland, Or., art pop band’s song “Flat Earth” combines alt-cumbia rhythms with a retro AM radio sound reminiscent of The Zombies or The Troggs. The result is an irresistible song that simply makes you want to move. This is not entirely new territory for the band, who has made a name for themselves building pop songs by weaving together west African pop with soulful 60s sounds. When your iPod is filled with nothing but soundalike indie rock, BRAINSTORM is a breath of masterfully executed fresh air.

Their new album, “Heat Waves,” gets a boost with production by Robby Moncrieff, who engineered Dirty Projectors’ iconic indie album “Bitte Orca” along with Youth Lagoon’s 7″. On “Heat Waves,” BRAINSTORM’s members Adam Baz, Tamara Barnes and Patrick Phillips show off their ability to make an excellent album of inescapable pop melodies, layered over shimmering drums, textured guitar lines, and energetic vocals. You can buy the album on iTunes.

The video for their single “Flat Earth,” which we are premiering today, was shot and directed by James Mitchell (from the band Nurses) along with BRAINSTORM’s Adam Baz who said, “”We just wanted to write something simple: a driving dance track with thick vocal harmonies and an explosive finale. Something irresistible and fun.” That blueprint was fully realized both on the album and in the captivating track, “Flat Earth.”

Trump Funny or Die

Art of the Spoof

Watch Johnny Depp, Jack McBrayer, Patton Oswalt and More in Funny or Die’s Donald Trump Biopic

Johnny Depp just got very classy.

We’re barely halfway through February, but this year’s Too Many Cooks Award for the most bizarre comedy project is already a lock. Blindsiding the world with greatness without any warning, Funny or Die released a 50-minute Donald Trump parody starring an unrecognizable Johnny Depp as Donny.

Ron Howard introduces this “lost” 1988 TV movie adaptation of Trump’s how-to manual The Art of the Deal produced with the retro quality of a Wendy’s training video. Along for the big hair and shoulder pads flashback are Patton Oswalt, Alfred Molina, Todd Margaret‘s Jack McBrayer, Andy Richter, Rob Huebel, Jason Mantzoukas, Paul Scheer, and Michaela Watkins as Ivana — as well as many Reagan-era surprises like a cameo from that loveable cat eater ALF and a theme song by Kenny Loggins.

Much like Eric Jonrosh of The Spoils Before Dying and The Spoils of Babylon fame, “Trump” writes, directs, and narrates his own epic tale of real estate wheelings-and-dealings. Check out the trailer below, and head over to Funny or Die to watch the full Donald Trump’s The Art of the Deal movie before the real Donald sics his army of lawyers on Will Ferrell and company. (For more bizarro Johnny Depp characters, be sure to catch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this month on IFC.)

Exclusive premiere: Sleeper Agent “That’s My Baby”

Sleeper Agent just gave this slow jangle, fan-favorite, the loving treatment it deserved. The band’s vocalists Alex Kandel and Tony Smith, perform the song at a karaoke bar with the rest of the band gaping at them with plastic beer cups, and no shortage of trans-dimensional hijinks. Tony Smith (vocals/guitar) also personally took the helm as director.

“The idea came from a lack of sleep and too much time away from home,” Smith said of the video, shot this summer in their home town of Bowling Green, Kentucky. “I wanted it to be dreamlike; something that’s relatively normal but seems ‘off.'”

Smith originally started out with a far more ambitious plan. “It involved time lapse photography, stop motion painting and gremlins (not the Spielberg kind),” he recalled. “Once we figured out this idea was impossible due to time and money, the video was nearly scrapped. Over several cups of coffee, a friend of ours suggested we use karaoke as the backdrop instead of stop motion and time lapse photography and the video was born.”

Time and money, a believable story, but one can’t help wonder if the unhinged, spandex-clad, punching glove, gorilla masked, lunatics he had to work with, were also a factor in changing direction. Either way it was a good call.

“That’s My Baby” is off Sleeper Agent’s debut album, “Celabrasion,” on Mom + Pop, which you can also find here, and here.

We’ll admit it: “I Believe I Can Fly” is our shower song. It’s got a smooth beat and you can dance to it. And as we await the return of R. Kelly’s hip hopera Trapped in the Closet to IFC we find ourselves singing the full R. Kelly song catalog to help wile away the hours until Sylvester, Rufus, Cathy, Gwendolyn, Bridget, Big Man, Rosie the Nosy Neighbor, Twan and Pimp Lucius are back.

But we don’t want to have all the fun ourselves. No, we like to share! So this year at New York Comic Con we are combining our two great loves — Comic-Con and R. Kelly — into the world’s greatest event: A Trapped in the Closet sing-along. Can we get an oh shit?
