“Catching Fire” has found its Mags.
Lionsgate announced today that veteran actress Lynn Cohen has been cast as the 80-something-year-old tribute competing in the Quarter Quell in the upcoming “Hunger Games” sequel. Mags is someone who Katniss respects for volunteering to compete in the special edition Hunger Games in place of a less stable former victor, as well as for her decision to put the lives of her allies before her own.
Cohen joins the fast-growing cast of “Catching Fire.” Several of the Quarter Quell tributes have been cast including Wiress and Johanna Mason, while Lionsgate is close to casting Beetee and Finnick. In addition, Philip Seymour Hoffman has come on board as gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee.
That still leaves characters like Cashmere, Gloss and Twill left to be cast. “Catching Fire” should start filming in a month or two, so expect these announcements to come fast and furious over the next few weeks. Lionsgate has been casting some major names in this movie to play the 22 other tributes in the Quarter Quell, so we’re really looking forward to hearing who will be joining the “Hunger Games” ensemble.
Fans will likely recognize Cohen from her long-running stint on “Law & Order” as Judge Elizabeth Mizener and on “Sex and the City” as Magda. She also appeared in “Munich,” “Across the Universe” and “Synecdoche, New York.” Up next she’ll be in “They Came Together” with Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler.
