On Sunday, wrap up the potluck, pack up your church clothes and be on your couch by 8 p.m. ET because we are showing Tim Burton’s adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.” The film stars Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, an ex-convict embittered at having been wrongly imprisoned and determined to seek vengeance against his accusers due to the grim fate that befell his wife and daughter while he was incarcerated. To exact his revenge, he returns to his hometown and opens a modest barber shop. The one thing different about Todd’s shop, however, is that no one who walks in for a trim is ever seen again. The film also stars Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Timothy Spall, and Alan Rickman.
Depp’s portrayal of Todd is everything we love about the actor: Manic, wild, and wholly invested in the role. Depp has made a name for himself on a truly diverse filmography that ranges from straight roles like Donnie Brasco to Lieutenant Victor in “Before Night Falls” to Ed Wood. He’s name is synonymous with Captain Jack Sparrow and the Mad Hatter and Benny from “Benny and Joon” and Rango. And don’t think Detective Tom Hanson isn’t still number one in our hearts, because he is and the forthcoming “21 Jump Street” movie will be watched many many times. Depp has an eye for finding great roles, so when it came time to pick five, well, we just did the best we could.
Here are five Johnny Depp roles we love, but obviously there are a lot more we would watch over and over again:
5. William Blake in “Dead Man”
4. Sweeney Todd in “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street”
3. Cry Baby in “Cry Baby”
2. Gilbert Grape in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”
1. Edward Scissorhands in “Edward Scissorhands”
