After the mixed reception of “Superman Returns,” fans of the world’s most popular and recognizable superhero have been very cautious in their reception to the upcoming “Man of Steel,” starring Henry Cavill. But the time for nervous hand-wringing is over, as the first image of the British actor as Supes has been released, moving us firmly into snap judgment territory. The photo comes one day after the announcement that Lawrence Fishburne will play Clark Kent’s boss, Perry White.
Eschewing the updated, “small-S” design sported by Brandon Routh in “Superman Returns,” Cavill’s costume looks much closer to a classic design for the character. It’s unclear, however, whether the costume will retain the boy-shorts seen in the last movie, as Cavill’s nether regions are obscured by shadow in this first image. Sorry, ladies.
The suit itself appears heavily textured throughout, with dimpling on the suit’s blue sections and a significantly raised S-symbol, another departure from Routh’s relatively smooth costume. When it comes to Cavill himself, the “Tudors” star definitely looks the part, with the thick, jet-black hair and heavy musculature befitting a proud son of Krypton.
When Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” hits theaters in the summer of 2013, he will be joined by an impressive cast that includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Superman’s earthborn foster parents, and Laurence Fishbourne as the aforementioned boss.
