Weird Al Yankovic is king of the parody. From “Eat It” to “I Lost On Jeopardy” to “Pretty Fly For a Rabbi,” Weird Al has made a career satirizing the biggest names in rock music and, most of the time, the stars are totally fine with it. Yesterday, however word came out that Weird Al had finally found one artist who was uninterested in being mocked: Lady Gaga. The egg-riding singer purportedly refused to allow Yankovic to mock her song “Born This Way” on his upcoming album. So Yankovic released the video to his Gaga parody “Perform This Way” via YouTube claiming fair use, as in, he made fair use of a copyrighted song because his work is protected by the first amendment as a parody.) Fans, however, were less forgiving and took to the pipes and tubes of the internet to decry the artist.
Now comes news that the conflict between Lady Gaga and Weird Al Yankovic has been settled. Turns out that Lady Gaga is totally fine with being musically skewered by Yankovic. Apparently Lady Gaga’s manager had told Yankovic’s team no without consulting the star. But now Gaga’s onboard (it is practically an honor after all) and all is right in the world of music mockery.
Here’s the video that caused the ruckus, Weird Al’s “Perform This Way”:
