Serving Up “Septien” With Director Michael Tully

michael-tully-03172011.jpgI’m such a fan of Michael Tully the film critic from Hammer To Nail that I sometimes forget about Michael Tully the filmmaker, who went to school with (and worked on the early films of) David Gordon Green, and who directed “Cocaine Angel” and the 2007 documentary rock doc “Silver Jew.” His latest film is “Septien,” which premiered at Sundance and on video on demand back in January from Sundance Selects. I talked with Tully the director about making (and acting in, and playing tennis in, and having a really crazy beard in) his film, and I spoke with Tully the critic about what he’s liked so far at SXSW 2011. He also made me sign one of the posters of me that’s hanging up in the IFC Crossroads House (by my request, I assure you), for which I will someday make him pay a horrible, painful price.

“Septien” will make its theatrical debut, as well as its return to VOD, this summer.

Filmmaker Danny Clinch stopped by the IFC Crossroads House at SXSW after the world premiere of his new film. He sat down with our host, Ted Leo, to talk about his film, “Live at Preservation Hall: A Louisiana Fairytale.” The film documents the collaboration between the New Orleans-based Preservation Hall Jazz Band with American rock band My Morning Jacket.

Before he won Breakthrough Performance at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival Awards, Evan Ross stopped by our studio with castmates Brittany Snow and Christian Serratos and director Aimée Lagos to talk about their film “96 Minutes.” Inspired by Lagos’ experiences working with inner city youth in college, the film tells the story of a car jacking — Snow and Serratos are the jack-ees, Ross is one of the jack-ers — while simultaneously flashing back in time to show the events that led to this pivotal moment in the lives of the characters. As you’ll see, the group got very close over the course of the shoot. Spending day after day inside a cramped car for hours on end will do that.
