Towards the end of our interview — the first at the IFC Crossroads House at South By Southwest 2011 — I chided director James Wan and writer/actor Leigh Whannell for scarring me for life with their new film “Insidious.” “You’re welcome,” Whannell replied with a chuckle. I like that response. Scaring people to death is Wan and Whannell’s job. And these guys are good at what they do.
Wan and Whannell redefined the horror movie with the first “Saw” film, but they’ve taken a more old school approach with “Insidious,” a haunted house thriller that’s light on viscera and heavy on atmosphere. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne star as a married couple who move into a new house that’s apparently haunted by some old, angry souls. Here’s our 2-part chat about the film, their first to play at SXSW. And be sure to look for my review of “Insidious” tomorrow right here on IFC.com.
