March 9th, 1997 — Notorious B.I.G. was shot and killed while riding in the passenger seat of a Suburban at an intersection after leaving an industry party in LA. The murder was similar to the drive up execution of Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas only six months earlier with whom the Notorious rapper was once a good friend, but the two had since become bitter rivals. Both murders remain unsolved.
However, CNN reports that new leads have opened up in the Notorious B.I.G., aka Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls, case. The anonymous law enforcement source wouldn’t divulge details, but told CNN that the investigation was “reinvigorated.” And as of new information, a task force that “includes the Los Angeles Police Department, L.A. County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI” are back on the case.
The original efforts came up with dead ends and an investigating detective, Russell Poole, retired from the force as a result, claiming that when his investigation lead to an alleged conspiracy involving members of his own police force he was thwarted from within. “I think I was getting too close to the truth,” Poole said. “I think they feared that the truth would be a scandal.”
