It’s hard to believe that J Mascis just finished his first solo record, after all these years and various projects outside of Dinosaur Jr. Remember his 1996 album, “Martin + Me?” Martin was a guitar, not a guy doing a duet with Mascis, but that was a live record. So Mascis’ for real first solo studio effort will be “Several Shades of Why” when it releases March 15th on Subpop.
As with most solo albums, Mascis has a host of guests join him including Kurt Vile, Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, Broken Social Scene’s Kevin Drew, A Silver Mount Zion’s Sophie Trudeau, Paulo Zappoli from Black Heart Procession, and Kurt Fedora, who actually contributed to a couple tracks on the aforementioned “Martin + Me.”
The album is almost entirely acoustic, but I expect it to be deafening at SXSW when Mascis will likely debut the material live. Here’s the first single, a jangly dream with a little tambourine called, “Not Enough.” [Stereogum]
