Before he was an Oscar-winning actor, Jeff Bridges was a drunk L.A. sheriff who couldn’t get off the hooch. At least he played one in 8 Million Ways to Die. When he tries to get his life together at an AA meeting, he gets invited to a party where he meets Alexandra Paul, a beautiful high class hooker, and her evil drug dealing pimp played by Andy Garcia. When his hooker lover is killed, he ends up back on the hooch, but finds redemption in solving the murder and meeting Rosanna Arquette, who is an ex-prostitute, which is a step up from being a hooker, but worse than being an amnesiac housewife.
The movie was based on the novel by Lawrence Block and was co-written for the screen by Oliver Stone, but it spends so much time vacillating between being a run-of-the-mill crime thriller and a love story that it ends up being simply confusing. The film is uneven at best, but it does have Andy Garcia with a ponytail, which is worth something. Jeff Bridges is the films most redeeming character and shows that his acting chops are well on their way to Oscar worthy. He just needed to find the right film.
Here’s a clip from the movie notable not only due to Andy Garcia’s ponytail, but because they mysteriously serve sno-cones out of the trunk of Andy Garcia’s car. There may be some spoilers, but there are also sno-cones:
