Every now and then a music video breaks loose from the pack and proves to be a work of art. I may be a couple weeks behind on this new one for the band Chairlift, but that won’t stop me from making it the first music viddy I go nuts about.
Director Ray Tintori blew minds last year with his video for MGMT’s “Time to Pretend.” It was an intense visual trip through a kind of happy nightmare, a neon Lord of the Flies loaded with giant kittens, intentionally bad cut/paste jobs, hip cliche’s and things too blown out to yet be hip or cliche. Like a Wowch T-shirt come to life, I dug it, especially when doing laundry.
Tintori’s latest effort is a leap, something altogether different, yet kind of familiar if you’ve spent any time watching jacked internet videos or too much digital cable in bad weather. With “Evident Utensil” Tintori not only builds upon his reputation for cool psychedelic effects but he trumps everything else with this totes wild shit. It’s mind mirage. It’s Timothy Leary liquid crystal dysplasia. It’s going to be copied too much.
