You’ve probably already seen Empire magazine’s "Greatest Directors of All Time" list, and we’re not going to bother repeating it here (BBC has it, if you insist on seeing it) because broadside magazine lists intended to pick fights and sell issues exhaust us. Much better are individuals lists, and the Independent has an early selection of top tens from various directors, with commentary by John Walker of "Halliwell’s Top 1000." Quentin Tarantino, Sidney Lumet, Michael Mann and Catherine Breillat are amongst those giving their lists, which are fascinating to analyze and find fault with (as Walker points out, "It’s a reminder that the most enjoyable criticism to read (and the easiest to write) is unkind.")
Meanwhile, Rediff‘s editors pull out the five Indian films including on Time magazine’s "All-time 100 movies" list, and are now gathering top ten lists from various Indian filmmakers, actors, crew, and critics. So far there are lists from directors Vipul Shah and Subhash Ghai.
And an idyllic list for the season — IFC News‘ Andrea Meyer rounds up some of this summer’s outdoor film festival, including the fabulous Rooftop Films, which kicks off tonight right in our ‘hood of Williamsburg.
